Redevelopment of Historic Dockyard

The new academic facilities and social spaces for Kent Business School (KBS) at The Historic Dockyard Campus Chatham have recently been completed and were required through significant success in student numbers at the campus, creating the need for space to grow further.

The Sail and Colour Loft was originally built in 1723 and will now be the home of KBS at Medway. The building is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and was where the sails of HMS Victory were made. This facility in conjunction with the Royal Dockyard Church and Galvanising Shop will provide a teaching and learning centre specially designed to meet the needs of KBS students.

The Sail and Colour Loft building is Grade 1 listed and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. As the building had many original features that needed to be preserved in situ, as well as uneven floors, these presented challenges in providing a learning environment with compartmentalised learning spaces. Working closely with the Historic Dockyard Trust (who also occupy the same building) and English Heritage a scheme was approved.
