We are delighted to announce that the Sibson Building at the University of Kent has been honoured at the Canterbury Society Design Awards 2018.  Up against strong competition, the project was named winner of the New Build category (outside conservation area), and adds this prestigious award to the others its won to date.

Judging was carried out by representatives of the Canterbury Society Committee, the Heritage Design Forum and invited members of the local community. The judging panel commended the quality of the design and construction, the improvement it has on the campus and facilities available for students. The BREEAM Excellent scheme is cleverly integrated into the woodland environment it sits in, with clear connections into the existing campus making easy wayfinding for students.

The University of Kent believe that the Sibson Building has enabled Kent Business School and SMSAS to become a world class hub attracting students and academics from around the world. The wider community have found the Sibson Building a magnet for interaction, with the ability to use the shared facilities, café and break out social spaces. Businesses and local groups have used the building as a venue to hold functions, seminars and CPD events.

The judges said: “This building works well at so many levels that it is clearly deserving of an award. The stepped form of the building sits comfortably into the sloping site and the unusual zig-zag plan form offers different views of the surrounding woodland, whilst successfully disguising the building mass. A good deal of attention has been paid to bringing natural light into all areas, including lecture theatres, which is to be greatly applauded. It is a very fine building and a pleasure to experience”

B&M carried out the role of Quantity Surveyor and Principal Designer on this project, working closely with the project team which included Penoyre & Prasad and Willmott Dixon.
