Tonbridge Town Lock has undergone a major refurbishment, transforming the space into fully accessible open space for the whole community to enjoy.

The scheme was designed to include flood defence work as well as the construction of an attractive new boathouse for the use by the EA and other river users.

The projects three main objectives were enhanced Urban Landscaping, flood control and telemetry monitoring. The Urban Landscaping creates a beautiful surrounding for all residents and visitors, the flood control provides protection for more than over 100 properties in the surrounding area and the telemetry monitoring provides the EA with accurate river level reports on the water levels.

The project was funded by TMBC, the Environment Agency and through development contributions from local housing schemes.

The latest telemetry monitoring system was installed giving the Environment Agency an insight into climatic conditions, providing early warning of flooding.

This enables them to manage their environment more efficiently, allocate maintenance and rapid-response resources effectively and reduce their flood risk.

There were many challenges throughout this project partially due to being located so closely to the river.

Provisions were put in place to ensure the safety of the public and contractors.

Collaborative working.

B&M worked closely alongside the Environment Agency (EA) and Tonbridge Malling Borough Council (TMBC). In addition, we also worked with Interserve Construction, CH2M, LJPM and BDr.

B&M have since been presented with the Tonbridge Civic Society Design Award 2016 for this project.
